Actually, I didn't learn much in school either, and I can see my kids not learning much, which I do not blame on the teachers at all. Between educational admin types jerking the curriculum around to buy "reading programs" that their friends create--to parents arguing with teachers when teachers try to report problem behaviors in the classroom--teachers have a lot to do.
All the more reason to take some time and focus on something basic. Kids spend a lot of time in schools--during the school year, more (non-sleeping) time than they spend with their families. Something concrete should be taught in all those hours.
