Actually, I have known a lot of super and really nice lawyers, so I'll take that as a compliment, although I don't personally have the brains, memory, or temperament for the job! :) I salute those who do.
Be glad you've not experienced our health care. I'm so sorry that everything I read about the NHS indicates it is struggling--I hope it is not too terrible. And yes, most US citizens have health insurance, many get it through their jobs (like the employer helps cover the costs/premiums) which continues to be a really unfair way to do it and screws all freelancers right out of the gate. The shocking thing now is that even with excellent health insurance, more people are being outright denied services or medications that the insurance company deems necessary. It's totally inefficient and very expensive--I had to sit and try to wrap my brain around 4 TRILLION every year. Insanity.
