By whose standards? The examples you cite make sense, but to me, usually older, lived-in things are really more "beautiful" and calming to my eye, while others seem to prefer new construction at all costs. I don't think there's anything simple about beauty. I find lithe, short men beautiful but that is not the typical "beautiful" male standard.
You also can't force people to value the same standards of beauty you do. Maybe a block filled with garbage is not beautiful, and yet many people find big cities beautiful overall and would rather live there than in a pristine, garbage-free landscape.
I know I'm probably missing your point completely. That's my own special brand of cluelessness.
