Everyone is still chasing it because it's a lovely and posh way to live, have enough to eat, have a house, have your kids in activities, eat out and travel, be done with work at 5 (this one is the one I still chase, I grew up on a farm and all you did was work all the time), have cleaning staff...

Also they're chasing it because nobody knows how vanishingly rare this lifestyle is and how it's going to be truly available to many fewer people, very shortly. The upper middle class lifestyle is about to become for the 2%, I feel, much like those rare scholarships which everyone still thinks they can get.
