Proof and truth are exceptionally slippery concepts. I'll admit I'm often guilty of using anecdotes as proof, too, or finding one set of numbers that really illustrates what I think even when those same numbers might say different things to different people!

My parents did a superb job to make a living on a farm (through the 1980s particularly, which I think of as the "family farm bloodbath," when everyone else went bankrupt). They barely got to go even to high school (several of my aunts didn't, as a matter of fact). But it was a tough road then and it would be an even tougher road now.
