"It’s a seed. But I was surprised to learn that it’s not in the grass family, but more closely related to beets and spinach. I guess unless you grow up in the Andes you probably never see the plant itself.
On a related note, I’ll bet relatively few Americans know that millet isn’t just bird seed. Humans can, and do, eat millets. And the plant is drought tolerant, unlike alfalfa and corn."--thanks to commenter Dave Lever.
