I agree with you totally that, although I could never work one of these jobs (I hate desk jobs), I think they've provided a living for lots of people. I too am troubled.

I wonder how many jobs, even civil service ones, will continue to be unionized or come with benefits. As such jobs get rarer and many more people compete for them--surely the power that be will figure out it's a buyer's market for labor and cut out all the benefits and rights from work that they can.
