I definitely feel where you're coming from.

It feels awful and even though my Mom has been lucky to find a place with caring staff, really, there isn't a day that it doesn't feel awful that she's there.

So many people extract promises like that from their kids--but there's no point. Just like parents have to do what they have to do sometimes--so do kids.

Try not to feel the guilt and good on you for providing care as long as you could.
