I don't remember much about "the talk," but I do remember telling my Mom I had gotten my first period and she said, "Oh, I'm so sorry." I still laugh about that. She was a woman with many kids who was happy to be a woman and yet her deeply practical side recognized it can be a real pain in the ass.
