I have another friend in the UK and she keeps asking me to explain how on earth athletics became seemingly the entire point of the American school system. I can't explain it in any way that makes sense to her or me.

I think you're right except now I think some people are being educated only to be pushed back into low-wage work as soon as they graduate (with huge debt) while the upper echelons take the fewer upper-tier jobs that are left. I absolutely believe this system is working the way the top people want it to work--even when some of them talk a good progressive game while simultaneously buying their child every opportunity available.
