I know in my mother's generation, many of her family members looked after elderly or disabled family in their home. But it would be so hard now, increasingly we are expected to leave our homes all the time--for work, for school, for activities, for everything. You can't just park a person with dementia on a couch and ask her to sit still for a few minutes while you duck out to pick up the kids. It just doesn't work that way. Although I know caregiving was hard then, too, it has always been hard.

Thank you for reading.
