I think he has been becoming more incoherent as time goes on.

Maybe normal was not the right word, but I do think he got partially where he is by being very skilled at making people think he's on their side. You just can't do that unless you're a good speaker/salesperson.

I think we absolutely need a non-normal person--a smart, thoughtful, planning person, to be president--but evidently people like that aren't good at soliciting donations and becoming politicians.
