I think you're absolutely right. I grew up on a farm and periodically one of my beloved kitties would be found dead, shot by somebody local for no more than target practice. (Cats weren't out there eating crops, after all, in the country they actually help keep rats and vermin out of sheds and barns.) It never happened to one of our dogs.
