I understand why you have this viewpoint.

My understanding of history is that Christians were not the ruling power at one point and had to hide in the catacombs--but I fully admit that my understanding of the church's history is lacking. It consists almost solely of what I could glean from saint/martyr stories and who knows how truthful those were.

I prefer to think of the church as the church of Dorothy Day and other Catholic activists like her.
