I'm sorry this was a frustrating aspect of your relationship. There's no doubt that there can be overlapping, and sometimes it can be cooperative and sometimes definitely not. I've definitely been in conversations where the person just keeps getting louder or more strident--it's not so much periodic interrupting then as it is a constant attempt at domination.
