It's a mixed bag. I was a longtime volunteer helping a person with macular degeneration to go shopping, and although I didn't always enjoy it at the time, I can look back at it now and see how that person became a friend and really enriched my life.

The PTO, though? Bad move. I'll be quitting and looking to find something else. I wish you luck in finding a better volunteering fit too.
