I've noticed the older generations are particularly attached to stuff. Maybe, if they are old enough or were not well off in the beginnings of their lives, the novelty of being able to buy and keep things they wanted never really wore off. I can understand that.
I do wish you luck. Aging is not easy and it's not easy for parents to give up control or their preferences. I do wish they would understand a bit more that it isn't personal--mostly it's a logistics problem of what to do with all these THINGS, 90% of which other people won't want at any price.
