I TOTALLY agree with you. You start to see why I say the top 20% have their boots on ALL our necks, even if they don't think they do? They dictate the spectrum of choices, because everyone wants to please THEM to get their money. I see this everywhere--in housing, in city planning, in consumer goods, in college dorms--nobody is saying this about the upper class. The lower 80% is not that hard to satisfy--my chosen aesthetic, frankly, is "not fancy"--but we do not even have that choice anymore. It is SO FRUSTRATING to try and express this to people! So thank you for understanding, you are helping me feel like I am not actually insane, although most people think I am.
