My spouse often accuses me of using a lot of hyperbole, so I've probably exaggerated a bit, but really, I do think the situation is bad. I think people who did garden or farm kind of feel like it's natural or inborn--my spouse and boys just bought an envelope of tomato seeds for the garden this spring--and just wanted to plant them just now, in mid- to late-June. (Uh, no, kids. In the upper Midwest you start the tomatoes inside when there is snow on the ground, then plant them out as sturdy plants as soon as you can in spring to get a chance at them yielding fruit before the next freeze.) And I was shocked how much I have NOT taught my kids. Evidently I was so damn glad to get off that farm, I went too hardcore in the other direction. I can't butcher like my parents did but I've definitely got to teach the kids where the meat comes from and how to basically prepare some of it.
