Take it from somebody who has difficulty staying employed, if you use anything approaching candor in work emails, it doesn't end (to use the word of the moment) "well."

I like to use this as my greeting: "I hope this email finds you with health insurance or dual citizenship with some country that doesn't believe all poor/self-employed people deserve to die." I know a lot of freelancers so it's a pretty common greeting.
