As I learn more, I am learning the "holds" are for situations exactly as you describe--but it took me a lot of work and listening and talking with others (like you) to figure that out. These things are not communicated well to parents. Likewise, I understand the need for privacy and quick responses, but to me it seems a lot to ask an entire school of kids (our school has multiple different "wings") to stay put in their classrooms and thereby missing the already short lunch, recess, and elective learning periods they have, every time there is a situation like that.

Both my kids have also experienced more serious "lockdowns" where there was a weapons risk, both inside and right outside the school, so I know there's a difference. It still seems weird to me that an entire generation is just totally used to getting locked in somewhere for a wide variety of reasons.

And thank you for teaching. I couldn't do it.
