Mostly I was very happy to let people pick out their own produce. I prefer to do that myself. But there's a nicer and gentler way to do that than most people do--people literally used to throw tomatoes back down in their box if they didn't want them. That sort of thing is hard on tomatoes! (And pears, and apples, and almost everything else.)
I'm so old I did most of my work in restaurants before plastic gloves were ubiquitous, and I honestly don't think that was worse than the way most people do it now, which is just to wear a plastic glove all day and never take it off or wash it. As with all things: wash your stuff when you get it home and you'll mostly be okay.
