Like anything else, it's complex. Fundamentally decent people can also be great artists; they can also sometimes slip up. Real jerks can be great artists and they can slip up a lot. Lots of really decent and really jerky people alike can go through life and never find their talent or the art or skill they're good at.

But once you let go of the idea that people who do great things are all saints--it's really quite freeing. It's also a good reminder that anyone can slip up, ourselves included, and what's more important than pairing those slip ups with big achievements is--as you say, pairing those slip ups with endeavoring to "raise your own bar" going forward, and also maybe to address/fix what you've done.
