I agree that intergenerational living is sometimes a really good idea. I think it used to be easier though--families seemed to live closer together geographically and culture was a bit different--I think it used to be that if a parent stayed home with the kids, they were "at home" more often--now being at home with kids means you're often driving them around to things a lot, and not being home at all.

Living with an independent older person like your grandpa might be do-able--and I don't know how long your grandma lived with you,but at a certain point with dementia it really becomes impossible to have a person who wanders away or has a lot of other needs in your home, even if giving care to them would literally be your one full-time job. And it never seems to be your one job.
