I have been surprised by the wealth of comments, I never think of communication styles or linguistics as being stereotypically hot topics. But you are right, people definitely do have their camps on this one!

I enjoyed the parallels to other norms like punctuality--definitely something everyone has their own preferred ideas on.

But it's nice to chat it over and you're right, it's a lot to expect that people in long-term relationships of any type won't sometimes be irritated by something. I think the hope is that we can all realize that and go a bit easier on one another.
