This is very interesting--it's been fascinating to read from people how this plays out at work. Did you listen to groups of people and hear them doing this when you were a journalist? I always think journalists must know a lot about communication because so much of the job is trying to elicit a response in the people you're interviewing AND the people who will be reading what you've written.
