This notion applies to everyone, not just those in creative fields. For many years I worked as a waitress even though the pay was terrible and the work really hard, just because I loved the surprise of seeing what people would tip me at the end of the meal. What was best was when I got generous tips (as a percentage of the bill) from people with whom I developed friendships and who I knew were not wealthy. It wasn't the amount, it was the generosity.
