To give context, when I gave birth to a healthy baby in a fairly routine c-section (nothing had gone wrong; it was scheduled because I had placenta previa), the bills I saw added up to 50 grand. A couple of years previously my full time salary as a librarian was 45 grand. I could have worked for a YEAR and not afforded a routine birth without insurance. That's out of whack.
