Tuning in and out is important, but also practice some little listening hacks. I like this one, "you know, you said that the other day, but I didn't understand--could you give me the highlights again?" or

"wait, what happened? How did I miss that? Please give me the details!" (They get so excited you want the details that they forget to be miffed that you missed the details.)

The details aren't always the important thing. Signaling to someone that you want to listen to them is. Good luck!
