Yes, I understand his frustration too. And you're right, I don't want to be rude. I was pleased to find this definition of "cooperative overlapping" because it helps me realize that kind of talk is its own thing, and I can't always engage in it, even with people I'm close to! Adaptability is what we're aiming at here.

The speed of speech also varies more than I ever realized. Some TV shows lately are moving too fast for me to catch all the words--and I'm a fast talker. I wonder if that bothers people who speak more slowly, to often having to be listening to others talk at top speed.
